Makna Simbolik Tari Petik Kakao di Sanggar Seni Mekar Arum Kecamatan Glenmore Kabupaten Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi Regency possesses a sociocultural identity deeply rooted in the traditions of plantation life, which is further aesthetically represented through the performing arts as a medium of cultural communication. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the symbolic meanings embedded in the movement, costumes, and props of the Petik Kakao Dance at the Mekar Arum Art Studio, while also examining their correlation with the cultural value system of the local community. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this phenomenon was analyzed through Richard E. Palmer’s hermeneutic framework and Koentjaraningrat’s theory of cultural values. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation, documentary analysis, and in-depth interviews. The results of the study indicate that the Petik Kakao Dance does not merely represent agrarian activities in a mimetic manner but symbolizes the work ethic, gratitude, and social harmony of the diverse agrarian community in Glenmore. These meanings are reflected through the dynamic stylization of the picking movements, the symbolic articulation of the “tompo” as a vessel of blessings, and the use of costumes featuring local motifs. This study makes a theoretical contribution to enriching the field of art hermeneutics and serves as an educational tool to ensure that the community’s philosophy of life remains relevant amid modernization.
