Therapeutic Potential of Rhodophyta; Bioactive Compound, Pharmacological Potential and Emerging Drug Delivary Strategies of Rhodophyta

Rhodophyta, commonly known as red algae, represents a valuable marine resource containing biologically active compounds with potential therapeutic uses. These include sulfated polysaccharides such as agar, carrageenan, and porphyran, as well as phycobiliproteins, polyphenols, and pigments. Experimental studies have reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities associated with certain red-algal compounds. These results indicate their possible applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, functional foods, and drug-delivery systems. However, current evidence is largely based on in vitro and preclinical studies. Further research, including mechanistic investigations and well-designed clinical trials, is necessary to establish their safety, bioavailability, efficacy, and therapeutic relevance in humans.
