Integrable and non-integrable LR geodesic flows on 5-dimensional 2-step nilpotent Lie groups

We investigate sub-Riemannian geodesic flows on 5-dimensional nilpotent Lie groups endowed with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. Up to isomorphism, there are exactly two such groups: the Heisenberg group $H_5$ and the 5-dimensional nilpotent Lie group with a 2-dimensional commutator subgroup. For each group, we study geodesic flows associated with both left-invariant (LL) and right-invariant (LR) distributions, deriving explicit descriptions of the corresponding geodesics and comparing their integrability properties. While the LL systems are known to be Liouville integrable, and even superintegrable, we show that LR systems are Liouville integrable only in two cases: on the Heisenberg group and, for the second group, on a distinguished invariant level set.
