AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF AVATU GRANTHI ROGA (HYPOTHYROIDISM)- A CASE STUDY

Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by inadequate production of thyroid hormones, resulting in metabolic disturbances and a reduction in the basal metabolic rate. In Ayurveda, diseases of the thyroid gland can be correlated with Avatu Granthi Roga. Ayurveda emphasizes identification and management of the underlying causative factors and considers the involvement of Kapha-Vata Dosha, Rasavaha Srotas, Medovaha Srotas, and Agnimandya in the manifestation of the condition. A 35-year-old female patient presented with Sthaulya (weight gain), Daurbalya (weakness), Twak Rukshata (dry skin), Kesha Patana (hair loss), Akshikut shotha (periorbital puffiness), mood swings, impaired memory, emotional distress, Tandra (drowsiness), Shirshool (headache), Amlapitta (hyperacidity), and elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and normal T3 and T4 levels for approximately four years. She had been receiving conventional medical treatment but reported inadequate relief in her symptoms. An Ayurvedic treatment protocol consisting of a group of herbo-mineral preparations was administered for four months and experienced relief in her symptoms and decrease in TSH level. Her allopathy medicines completely stopped.
