Reimagining Sustainable Natural Resource Governance through the Paradigm of Maqāṣid Al-Sharī‘ah and Ecological Justice

The exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation call for sustainable governance grounded in ethical and normative values. This study aims to identify Islamic principles in responding to contemporary environmental governance challenges and their relevance to sustainable natural resource management. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach through an integrative literature review of 25 scientific publications, primarily from 2021–2026, using content analysis and thematic synthesis. The results indicate that there are eight sustainable governance strategies closely linked to Islamic values within the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, including public interest-based planning, regulation, participation, accountability, and law enforcement which reflect the principles of justice (‘adl) and stewardship (amānah),pollution monitoring, ecosystem restoration, and sustainability evaluation grounded in the principles of balance (mīzān) and ecological stewardship (khilāfah). The contribution of this research is that it offers an integrative framework for environmental governance that is equitable, sustainable, and oriented toward the well-being of future generations.
