A Scoping Review of Precision Nursing in Maternal Health

This scoping review aimed to examine the current status of the application of precision nursing approaches in maternal and reproductive health care settings. A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O’Malley’s framework. Four electronic databases were searched: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. The final search was conducted in August 2026. A total of 5 studies addressing 4 clinical topics through precision nursing approaches applied in maternity care settings were included in the review. No studies applying precision nursing approaches in reproductive care settings were identified. Three studies addressed prenatal care, whereas the remaining 2 addressed postpartum care. The prenatal studies applied precision nursing to reduce the risk of preterm birth (k=2) or minimize unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures following first-trimester screening (k=1). The postpartum studies applied precision nursing to increase the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding at discharge (k=1) or prevent postpartum urinary dysfunction (k=1). Most studies remained at the stage of developing predictive models or stratification systems and recommended nursing interventions without implementing them in clinical practice. This scoping review provides an overview of how the precision nursing approach has been applied in maternal care settings. The findings indicate considerable scope for further application of precision nursing in maternity care. Given the growing interest in precision health, nurse researchers and practitioners should identify maternal and reproductive clinical areas in which precision nursing could be applied and consider implementing relevant nursing interventions.
