Hungate York and Hunwick

This paper follows a proposed journey from Hungate in York through Cana Barn, Thornborough and Catterick to Hunwick. Its subject is the road as a succession of recognizable places: a street and river frontage, a monumental gathering landscape, crossings and a possible assembly destination. The original photographs and annotated maps make that enquiry visible, while newer maps distinguish the proposed itinerary from the separate Ursa Minor angular construction. I ask whether older monuments and gathering places could have helped people remember journeys and influenced the corridors used by later roads. The argument connects York with my wider interpretation of Northumbrian institutions and English route diagrams, while preserving differences between an itinerary, a symbolic geographical frame and a measured survey. Published archaeology supplies definite monuments and Roman transport evidence. The continuity of the complete route, the proposed Hunwick assembly and any stellar association remain questions to be tested through the history of particular places and passages.
