Maritime Community Protection, Population Services, and Resilience in Maringkik Island Village, East Lombok
Background: Residents of Maringkik Island Village face limited access to clean water, food, education, health care, and maritime transportation, alongside coastal abrasion and other disaster risks. These overlapping vulnerabilities necessitate an integrated assessment of public service provision and community resilience. Objective: This study examines maritime community protection in Maringkik Island Village, East Lombok, through the interrelated dimensions of population administration and services, social adaptation, and maritime resilience. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed, drawing on interviews with local government representatives, village stakeholders, private-sector actors, and residents, as well as field observations and document reviews. The collected data were organized and analyzed thematically to examine public service provision, livelihoods, environmental vulnerability, and local adaptation strategies. Results: Population administration services, education, health care, and social assistance are available, but access and continuity remain constrained. Brackish groundwater, limited arable land, dependence on maritime transportation, and coastal hazards expose households to food insecurity and environmental risks. Fishing, weaving, small businesses, collective water management, and family-based divisions of labor support community adaptation, although access to productive financing and adequate infrastructure remains limited. Conclusion: Maritime community protection on Maringkik Island depends on both effective public services and community-based resilience. Existing social networks and livelihood strategies help residents cope with resource scarcity but cannot replace the need for reliable access to clean water, transportation, health care, economic support, and coastal risk management.
