Selection of High Yielding and Quality Linseed Genotypes through Productivity andBiochemical Study

Edible oil demand in Bangladesh is increasing rapidly, highlighting the need to enhance domestic oilseed production. Linseed, an underutilized oilseed crop, offers potential for improving oilseed self-sufficiency in the country. However, improving its productivity requires the identification of high yielding superior genotypes. This study was conducted to screen linseed genotypes for high yield and quality based on yield performance and biochemical traits. Ten linseed genotypes were evaluated using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data were recorded on plant height, primary branches plant−1, capsules plant−1, seeds capsule−1, seed yield plant−1, 1000-seed weight, biological yield, seed yield, harvest index, oil content and the composition of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Yield components, seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition were significantly varied in different linseed genotypes except seeds capsule−1. The maximum seed yield (1.45 t ha−1) was recorded in KUSHTIA-2, while the minimum seed yield (1.00 t ha−1) was recorded in NILA. The order of linseed genotypes based on seed yield was KUSHTIA-2 > LIN 1903 > GOPALGANJ > WB > BD 10703 > KUSHTIA-1 > BD 10705 > LIN C 2017 > CHAPAI > NILA. Maximum oil content (44.44%) was recorded in WB and the minimum (42.18%) was recorded in CHAPAI. Based on oil content, the order of linseed genotypes was WB > KUSHTIA-1 > LIN C 2017 > GOPALGANJ > KUSHTIA-2 > LIN 1903 > BD 10703 > NILA > BD 10705 > CHAPAI. Genotypes WB, KUSHTIA-2, LIN 1903 and BD 10703 had comparatively better fatty acid content as compared to other genotypes. The superior genotype(s) identified require further multi-environment evaluation to confirm their yield stability and oil content. Such validation would facilitate their effective utilization in linseed improvement programs and sustainable cultivation across diverse agro-climatic conditions of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Agron. Abstract

Data were recorded on plant height, primary branches plant−1, capsules plant−1, seeds capsule−1, seed yield plant−1, 1000-seed weight, biological yield, seed yield, harvest index, oil content and the composition of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Yield components, seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition were significantly varied in different linseed genotypes except seeds capsule−1. The maximum seed yield (1.45 t ha−1) was recorded in KUSHTIA-2, while the minimum seed yield (1.00 t ha−1) was recorded in NILA.
