Visual Pollution in Imperatriz (MA)
Visual pollution is a significant urban environmental problem, resulting primarily from excessive commercial advertising, the haphazard occupation of public spaces, and the concentration of overhead power and telecommunications lines. This study analyzed visual pollution in the municipality of Imperatriz (MA), highlighting its impacts on the urban landscape, public health, traffic safety, and quality of life, as well as the role of municipal environmental management in mitigating this phenomenon. The research adopted a qualitative approach, based on a literature review and an analysis of Brazilian environmental and urban planning legislation, including the Federal Constitution, the National Environmental Policy, the City Statute, and the Municipal Code of Ordinances. The results showed that visual pollution compromises the landscape, reduces collective well-being, and requires integrated public policies for urban planning, enforcement, environmental education, and infrastructure modernization. Coordinated action among government, the private sector, and society is essential to promote sustainable, environmentally balanced cities.
