Advances in OLED Technology: From Fundamental Materials, Device Architectures to Emerging Applications

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have emerged as a leading optoelectronic platform, owing to their high efficiency, tunable emission, and mechanical flexibility, yet key questions remain about which molecular design strategies and device architectures are advancing commercial performance, and where persistent bottlenecks, such as blueemitter instability, continue to limit progress, Here, we address these questions through a data-driven analysis of approximately 86 thousand OLED-related documents from the CAS Content CollectionTM spanning 2016–2026, a period chosen to capture recent developments in this rapidly evolving field. This data-driven study provides a comprehensive assessment of advances across multiple dimensions of OLED technology. Global innovation trends reveal a pronounced concentration of intellectual property and technological development in East Asia, reflecting strong alignment between research activity and manufacturing infrastructure. Materials-level analysis highlights diverse molecular motifs governing key processes such as charge transport, exciton management, and emission. Concurrently, device architectures, including tandem structures, micro‑OLED platforms, flexible form factors, and hybrid integration, demonstrate a clear shift toward application-driven optimization. The application landscape indicates widespread commercialization in consumer electronics and display technologies, with expanding roles in lighting, automotive systems, wearable devices, medical technologies, and immersive platforms such as augmented and virtual reality. Despite ongoing challenges related to emitter stability, efficiency roll-off, and manufacturing complexity, emerging approaches in data-driven materials discovery and scalable fabrication are expected to enable further performance enhancements. Overall, OLEDs represent a mature yet continuously advancing platform with significant potential for next-generation display and integrated optoelectronic applications.
