Digitalization of Education and Structural Inequalities in Indonesia’s 3T Regions A Phenomenological Perspective

This study explores the impact of digitalization on education in Indonesia’s 3T (frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged) regions through a phenomenological approach. While digital transformation offers significant opportunities for enhancing learning, findings reveal persistent structural inequalities that hinder equitable access. More than half of schools in 3T areas lack stable electricity and internet, limiting the effectiveness of online learning. Teachers face greater technical challenges due to low digital literacy, while many students are unable to participate fully because of limited access to devices. Government initiatives, such as special allowances for teachers and distribution of interactive digital boards, have provided partial support but remain unevenly implemented. The phenomenological perspective highlights that students in 3T regions experience isolation, reduced motivation, and technical barriers distinct from urban learners. These results underscore the need for contextualized and inclusive policies that integrate infrastructure development, teacher capacity building, device distribution, and community-based digital literacy programs to ensure equitable educational outcomes across Indonesia.
