The Effect of Implementing Slow Deep Breathing Therapy and Warm Foot Soaks on Blood Pressure in Elderly Hypertension Patients in The Inpatient Areas at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam

Hypertension is a chronic disease often experienced by the elderly and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Blood pressure control in the elderly can be done through pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. Non-pharmacological therapy that is easy, safe, and can be done independently is Slow Deep Breathing Therapy and soaking feet in warm water. The combination of these two therapies can provide a relaxing effect, reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and increase peripheral vasodilation. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of Slow Deep Breathing Therapy and soaking feet in warm water on blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension in the inpatient ward of Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam in 2025. Method: This study used a quantitative design with a pre-experimental method through a one group pretest-posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 20 elderly people with hypertension who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Blood pressure measurements were taken before and after the intervention. Data analysis was carried out using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of 0.05. Before the intervention, the majority of respondents were in the category of grade 1 hypertension at 55.0%. After receiving Slow Deep Breathing Therapy and a warm foot soak, the majority of respondents (45.0%) were in the normal blood pressure category. The Wilcoxon test results showed a Z-value of -4.000 and a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in blood pressure before and after the intervention. Conclusion: Slow Deep Breathing Therapy and a warm foot soak significantly reduced blood pressure in elderly patients with hypertension.
