Time burden and treatment patterns of patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia receiving parenteral hypomethylating agents in combination with venetoclax

Parenteral hypomethylating agents (HMAs) combined with venetoclax are a first-line treatment for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) considered ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. Using a retrospective claims database (Humana Healthcare Research Database; 01/01/2019-12/31/2024), time burden, time at home, treatment patterns and persistence were characterized among adults with newly diagnosed AML treated with HMA + venetoclax, from index (first parenteral HMA claim) through end of follow-up (earliest of death, end of insurance eligibility, or end of data). Patients (n = 737; median follow-up: 8.0 months) spent a mean of 11.9 days per month on healthcare visits, with 65.0% of time spent at home or not receiving cancer care. Median time to discontinuation or death on HMA therapy when considering any HMA cycle and label-conforming cycles (≥16 days of venetoclax supply; ≥4/3 days of azacitidine/decitabine) was 5.2 and 2.8 months, respectively. These findings highlight the substantial time burden associated with HMA combined with venetoclax.
