Biblical Economics

The Bible was written long before economists could input any ideas, and yet it records human motivations, preferences, production, constraints, and transaction costs in ways that are remarkably economic. Indeed, the Bible is a rich source of qualitative data for economics, especially with regard to teaching. This paper uses Biblical passages to illustrate economic ideas, and argues these are useful pedagogical tools for the classroom. Each short section ends with suggestions for Biblical passage use in a classroom.

Abstract

The Bible was written long before economists could input any ideas, and yet it records human motivations, preferences, production, constraints, and transaction costs in ways that are remarkably economic. Indeed, the Bible is a rich source of qualitative data for economics, especially with regard to teaching. This paper uses Biblical passages to illustrate economic ideas, and argues these are useful pedagogical tools for the classroom. Each short section ends with suggestions for Biblical passage use in a classroom.
