A Unified Joint Inversion Framework of Surface Wave Dispersion Data With Teleseismic and Local Body Wave Traveltimes: Methodology and Applications to Dense Arrays

Abstract We develop a unified joint inversion framework that integrates traveltimes from teleseismic body wave, local body wave, and surface wave data to construct 3‐D Vp and Vs models. The method builds upon a joint inversion framework based on the direct surface wave tomography (DSurfTomo) and local body wave double difference tomography (tomoDD), and is extended by incorporating the teleseismic station‐pair double difference differential times within a regional teleseismic inversion framework. This enables full exploitation of the complementary sensitivities of different data types, allowing the construction of a unified regional model spanning a broader depth range from the upper crust to the upper mantle. We validate the proposed method by applying it to both synthetic tests and real data inversions using realistic array configurations. We first apply it to the southern California plate boundary region, where extensive seismic observations are available, and the resulting 3‐D lithospheric‐scale Vp and Vs model is consistent with previous studies, thereby validating the feasibility of the proposed approach. The method is subsequently applied to the Weifang array in the Tanlu Fault Zone (TLFZ), demonstrating its effectiveness for small‐scale temporary dense arrays. By using teleseismic body wave data, the method enables the construction of a unified model with an extended depth range, revealing flexibility across different array scales and highlighting its potential to enhance the utilization of small‐scale temporary dense array data sets. The construction of a unified model provides important constraints for linking tectonic processes with the underlying geodynamic mechanisms.
