Experiences and Meanings of Companion Robot Use in Community-Based Care: A Qualitative Study of Older Adults and Care Workers
This qualitative study explored companion robot experiences among older adults and care workers, focusing on emotional well-being, dignity, and person-centered care. We interviewed 10 older adults and conducted two focus groups with six social workers and five care assistants. Thematic analysis identified eight themes that were synthesized into four dimensions: psychological meaning, relational connectivity, technological coexistence, and future directions. Companion robots offered comfort and fostered human connection, but also raised concerns about isolation, dignity, privacy, and care worker burden. We propose a Human-Centered Hybrid Care Model integrating companion robots, physically assistive technologies, and human care workers.
