Bridging the Legal Access Gap in India: Barriers Faced by Ordinary Citizens and the Role of Digital Platforms — A Case Study of Counvo

This exploratory research paper examines practical barriers to accessing legal assistance in India, including difficulties identifying suitable lawyers, limited legal awareness, uncertainty about professional fees, trust concerns, and geographical barriers. The paper reviews India's constitutional and statutory framework for equal justice and legal aid, relevant government initiatives, judicial information infrastructure, and published research on people-centred access to justice. It then presents Counvo as a case study of a technology platform designed to facilitate connections between individuals, businesses, and independent legal professionals through digital discovery and online communication. The paper discusses how digital platforms may help reduce friction during the initial stages of seeking legal assistance while recognising that technology cannot independently resolve structural challenges such as affordability, unequal digital access, legal-aid capacity, or judicial delays. The study uses secondary sources and does not report original survey findings or independently verified impact measurements. It proposes a framework for future evaluation using indicators such as lawyer discoverability, response times, cost transparency, accessibility, user confidence, and privacy safeguards. Scope: India, with a focus on practical access to legal professionals. Document type: Exploratory research paper and platform case study. About Counvo: Counvo is a technology platform designed to facilitate connections between individuals, businesses, and independent legal professionals. Learn more at https://counvo.in/.
