Geomechanical Stability Assessment of Underground Chalk Heritage Galleries Based on TLS-Derived 3D Geometry and Numerical Modelling

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the stability of selected chambers within the historic chalk underground workings using advanced three-dimensional computational methods. A numerical model was developed based on terrestrial laser scanning data. Strength and deformation tests were conducted on chalk samples to determine the parameters of the constitutive model. The stability analysis of selected chambers beneath the market square in Chełm identified potential zones characterised by low stability indices. Furthermore, the analysis revealed the most highly stressed sections of the underground workings.
