Decarbonisation of the Indian Chemical Industry: A Quantitative Analysis with AI and Quantum Approaches
The chemical industry plays a crucial role in modern life, producing materials essential for applications ranging from healthcare and clothing to agriculture and electronics. It forms the backbone of industrial progress and is a major contributor to India’s economy. However, the industry is also a significant emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs), largely due to its dependence on petroleum-based feedstocks and fossil fuels. This reliance poses serious environmental challenges, particularly concerning climate change and sustainability. Therefore, decarbonisation—reducing GHG emissions—has become an urgent priority for ensuring a sustainable future. Achieving this goal offers socio-economic and financial benefits for both the industry and society. Yet, decarbonising the chemical sector is a complex process that demands technological innovation, collaboration, and long-term investment. Through adopting cleaner production technologies, improving energy efficiency, and shifting toward renewable feedstocks, the industry can create a win-win situation for itself and the environment. This transition ensures economic growth while promoting environmental responsibility and social well-being. A quantitative analysis of emission sources is essential to identify effective decarbonisation strategies and estimate potential reductions. The challenges and opportunities associated with decarbonising India’s chemical industry must be thoroughly examined to develop a roadmap for sustainable industrial growth aligned with future technological advancements.
