Medicaid Work Requirements and Behavioral Health: Risks and Opportunities for Peer Support
This Viewpoint examines the opportunities and challenges that Medicaid's community engagement requirements present for peer support practice and peer-led service delivery.Peer support specialists and peer-run organizations may contribute to successful implementation of these requirements by promoting meaningful community participation and helping individuals remain connected to services and supports. However, policy design and administration should be informed by peer support principles, including self-determination, choice, mutuality, and strengths-based approaches, to minimize coverage disruptions and support wellness, recovery, and community living.
