American Academy of Optometry Think Tank III: Current challenges and future directions in low vision research

Current challenges and future directions in low vision research1 World Health Organization and the Vision Loss Expert Group of the Global Burden of Disease Study included uncorrected refractive errors as a cause of vision impairment. In their papers, they estimated 567 million people (7.6% of the world population) with acuity worse than 20/40 in 2020.The number reported in this paper (435 million) excluded the number of people with vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors, to be consistent with the definition of low vision.

Abstract

Current challenges and future directions in low vision research1 World Health Organization and the Vision Loss Expert Group of the Global Burden of Disease Study included uncorrected refractive errors as a cause of vision impairment. In their papers, they estimated 567 million people (7.6% of the world population) with acuity worse than 20/40 in 2020.The number reported in this paper (435 million) excluded the number of people with vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors, to be consistent with the definition of low vision.
