Data and Code for: Solar Alignment and the March New Year: A Comparative Archaeoastronomical Analysis of Devinuvara Galge and Nalanda Gedige, Sri Lanka

# Reproducibility Data: Solar Alignment and the March New Year (Sri Lanka) - Version 2 This repository contains the raw data, Python scripts, and statistical models used to generate the results in the manuscript:**"Solar Alignment and the March New Year: A Comparative Archaeoastronomical Analysis of Devinuvara Galge and Nalanda Gedige, Sri Lanka"** ### Important Updates in Version 2* **Refined Azimuth:** The principal axis of the Devinuvara Galge has been refined from an initial estimate of 91° to exactly **90.00° (True East)** following satellite analysis and preliminary smartphone compass field verification.* **Equinox Alignment:** The model now tests and confirms a deliberate equinoctial alignment (March 20-21), mirroring the architectural principles of the Modhera Sun Temple.* **Nalanda Gedige Integration:** Added data evaluating the Nalanda Gedige's alignment at 84° (zenith passage over Dondra Head) and its joint spatial probability with Devinuvara.* **Code Correction:** The `01_noaa_calculations.py` script has been updated to use the correct trigonometric function (`math.acos`) for calculating sunrise azimuths from solar declination. ### Contents* `data/`: * `devinuvara_noaa.csv` (NOAA solar calculations for the equinox) * `monte_carlo_results.csv` (Summary of p-values) * `gadm41_LKA_0.json` (GADM v4.1 boundary data for Sri Lanka)* `code/`: * `01_noaa_calculations.py` (Verifies equinox azimuths) * `02_azimuth_monte_carlo.py` (Reproduces azimuth p-values: Uniform and Normal nulls) * `03_spatial_probability.py` (Reproduces the joint spatial probability, p = 1.43e-6) ### RequirementsTo run the scripts, install the following Python libraries:`pip install numpy pandas geopandas shapely pyproj` ### Instructions1. Run `01_noaa_calculations.py` to verify the equinox sunrise azimuths.2. Run `02_azimuth_monte_carlo.py` to reproduce the azimuth p-values.3. Run `03_spatial_probability.py` to reproduce the joint spatial probability and Bonferroni correction. *Note: The companion preprint for the Nalanda Gedige analysis is available at DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.23475927 and is currently under peer review at PCI Archaeology.*
