Effect of Addition of Borax, Citronella Oil, or Both to Tub Traps with Protein Hydrolysate Attractant on Their Attractiveness to the Japanese Orange Fly, Bactrocera tsuneonis (Diptera: Tephritidae)

We compared the numbers of Japanese orange flies, Bactrocera tsuneonis (Diptera: Tephritidae), caught in plastic tub traps baited with protein hydrolysate attractant (PHA) without (control) or with the addition of borax, citronella oil bait, or both. The number of adult B. tsuneonis caught in traps baited with PHA to which borax had been added was 2.40 times that in the control. The number of adult Japanese orange flies caught in traps baited with PHA with citronella oil bait was 1.57 times that in the control traps. The increase in the number of Japanese orange flies captured with the addition of borax to PHA was greater than that obtained with PHA combined with citronella oil bait, which has previously been reported to attract B. tsuneonis. Therefore, we expect that the addition of borax to PHA in plastic tub traps will improve monitoring of B. tsuneonis.

Abstract

We compared the numbers of Japanese orange flies, Bactrocera tsuneonis (Diptera: Tephritidae), caught in plastic tub traps baited with protein hydrolysate attractant (PHA) without (control) or with the addition of borax, citronella oil bait, or both. The number of adult B. tsuneonis caught in traps baited with PHA to which borax had been added was 2.40 times that in the control. The number of adult Japanese orange flies caught in traps baited with PHA with citronella oil bait was 1.57 times that in the control traps. The increase in the number of Japanese orange flies captured with the addition of borax to PHA was greater than that obtained with PHA combined with citronella oil bait, which has previously been reported to attract B. tsuneonis. Therefore, we expect that the addition of borax to PHA in plastic tub traps will improve monitoring of B. tsuneonis.
