PERBANDINGAN 2 KOMBINASI PERLAKUAN SUHU DAN DURASI PIROLISIS TERHADAP KARAKTERISTIK ARANG AKTIF DARI SERBUK BENUAS (Shorea laevis Ridl.)

Activated charcoal is a porous carbonaceous material widely used as an adsorbent in industrial, household, and environmental applications. Benuas wood sawdust (Shorea laevis Ridl.) is a biomass residue generated by the furniture industry that has potential as a raw material for carbon-based materials. This study compared two pyrolysis conditions, namely a smoke temperature of 130°C for 6 h and 110°C for 8 h, followed by the same thermal treatment at 1000°C for 1 h. Because temperature and pyrolysis duration were varied simultaneously between the two conditions, the study was designed solely to compare the two process conditions and was not intended to estimate the individual effects of temperature or duration. The proximate properties analyzed included moisture content, volatile matter content, ash content, and fixed carbon content. The results showed moisture contents of 2.69% and 3.17%, volatile matter contents of 4.58% and 4.46%, ash contents of 0.95% and 0.93%, and fixed carbon contents of 91.78% and 91.44% under the 130°C/6 h and 110°C/8 h conditions, respectively. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences between the two conditions in moisture and ash contents, whereas volatile matter and fixed carbon contents did not differ significantly. The volatile matter and fixed carbon contents, particularly the high fixed carbon values ranging from 91.44% to 91.78%, complied with the requirements of SNI 06-3730-1995 for technical activated charcoal, SNI 06-4253-1996 for activated charcoal used in drinking water treatment, and SNI 06-4262-1996 for activated charcoal used in edible oil purification. Overall, the activated charcoal produced exhibited quality characteristics that met the applicable Indonesian standards for technical activated charcoal and demonstrated potential for use in adsorption and purification processes.
