Case report: Surgical correction of three fleshy dermoid cycts in a calf

A dermoid cyst is a congenital cutaneous anomaly commonly affecting the limbus, conjunctiva, and cornea, often resulting in ocular irritation, epiphora, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. A six-day-old calf, weighing approximately 50 kg, was presented to the SAQ Teaching Veterinary Hospital at Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) with a congenital abnormality of the left eye. Clinical examination revealed three hairy, soft masses attached to the cornea and sclera, accompanied by severe lacrimation. Based on the clinical findings, the case was classified as a congenital dermoid cyst, and surgical correction was recommended. Ketamine was injected intravenously at a dose of 2 mg/kg to induce general anesthesia following premedication with 0.5 mg/kg of diazepam. To desensitize the eyeball, a peterson and auriculopalpebral nerve block with 2% lidocaine was carried out. The dermoid tissues located on the dorsal surface of the cornea were excised by a superficial keratectomy with the help of an electrocauterizer to halt the bleeding. Healing was uneventful within 14 post-operative days. This study emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and surgical intervention to prevent long-term ocular complications associated with dermoid cysts.
