Factors Associated with the Selection of Non-Hormonal Long-Acting Contraceptive Methods

Postpartum hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, which may be triggered by short birth intervals and unintended pregnancies. Therefore, improving reproductive health service coverage through family planning programs is essential, particularly the use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC). This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the selection of non-hormonal LARC among couples of reproductive age. This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all family planning acceptors totaling 1,246 individuals, with 92 respondents selected through random sampling. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from official documents and supporting literature. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with the Chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that most respondents were aged 26–35 years (60.87%), had junior high school education (43.48%), worked as self-employed individuals (29.35%), were Muslim (55.43%), and belonged to the Malay ethnic group (48.91%). Most respondents lived more than 2.5 km from health service facilities (65.22%). Respondents who did not choose LARC were more numerous (55.43%) than those who chose it (44.57%). Bivariate analysis revealed that all variables were significantly associated with the selection of non-hormonal LARC, including attitude (p=0.02), beliefs (p=0.015), service location/distance (p=0.015), the role of health workers (p=0.015), husband’s support (p=0.015), and service facilities (p=0.01). In conclusion, positive attitudes, good beliefs, easy access to services, support from health workers, husband’s support, and adequate facilities increased the likelihood of respondents choosing non-hormonal LARC. Strengthening education and improving service quality are necessary to encourage greater LARC utilization.
