Golden-Ratio Projections of Z^5 and E8 Lattices Generate Icosahedral Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Icosahedral quasicrystals emerge as golden-ratio-spaced projections of higher-dimensional lattices (Z^5 → 3D via cut-and-project), with a demonstrated link to the E8 root lattice. | MATH: Cut-and-project: physical space E∥ (dim 3) + perpendicular space E⊥ (dim 2) embedded in Z^5; acceptance window = projection of unit hypercube. Plane spacing follows Fibonacci chain: t_n = n + (1/φ)·{nφ}, φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.6180339887. Icosagrid: 10 plane sets, icosahedral point group I_h (order 120). Diffraction: Bragg peaks at k = Σ h_i a_i* with h_i ∈ Z, indexed by 6 integers (3+3) for icosahedral QC. | CONNECTION: φ = 1.618, 1/φ = 0.618, φ² = 2.618, 1/φ² = 0.382 all appear as inflation/deflation eigenvalues of the substitution matrix; icosahedral symmetry is the maximal finite subgroup of SO(3) compatible with 5-fold axes — forbidden in classical crystallography (crystallographic restriction theorem). E8 ⊃ icosahedral QC via 8D→3D projection; E8 root system has 240 roots, Coxeter number 30, Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
