Sustainable Tourism Development and Environmental Conservation: Assessing the Balance between Tourism Growth and Ecosystem Protection

Tourism depends on healthy ecosystems, yet its growth can degrade the very landscapes, coasts, and species that attract visitors. This article examines how tourism development affects natural ecosystems and evaluates strategies for balancing tourism revenue with biodiversity conservation, waste management, and the protection of natural resources. Using an integrative review of 24 peer-reviewed sources, the study synthesises evidence on recreation impacts, coastal and marine pressures, species introductions, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, waste generation, and conservation finance. Four findings stand out. First, impacts are pressure-specific: trampling and trail use, boating and coastal development, species transport, emissions, water demand, and waste each act on different parts of the environment and call for different responses. Second, tourism can generate substantial conservation revenue, but the scale of visitation and spending recorded in protected areas contrasts with the funding available to manage them. Third, revenue does not protect ecosystems unless it is paired with visitor management, regulation, and reinvestment, and ecotourism itself can create new pressures. Fourth, waste and resource use are measurable and manageable through demand forecasting, prevention, and monitoring. The article contributes an impact-pathway map (Table 1), a comparison of balancing strategies and their conditions (Table 2), and a conceptual model of the growth, pressure, condition, and response cycle (Figure 1). Because the study is a conceptual review, its propositions require testing with site-level monitoring data.
