ARBOK-HE: Wellhead Helium Extraction by Vacuum Separation That Lowers the Economic Threshold from 0.3% to 0.01%

Helium is a by-product of natural gas production, it cannot be synthesized, and once vented it is lost. The established industrial route, cryogenic distillation at about minus 185 °C, is economical only for gas containing at least 0.3% helium. Gas with 0.01–0.1% helium, which makes up most of the world's natural gas fields, is therefore treated as unviable and is not developed. We describe ARBOK-HE, a wellhead helium extraction module built on ARBOK Vacuum Cracking: deep vacuum phase separation at ambient temperature, without cooling the whole gas stream and without membranes, catalysts or reagents. The enriched helium fraction is passed to the ARBOK CrioJet module for final conditioning and liquefaction, and the remaining gas continues into the pipeline unchanged. The minimum viable helium concentration falls from 0.3% to 0.01%, a factor of 30. Specific energy consumption is 0.25–0.83 kWh per kg of helium, against 15–25 kWh per kg for cryogenic plants, which is 25 to 80 times lower and about 500 times lower at the richest US fields; energy recuperation reaches 98%. The unit is delivered in a 20-ft or 8-ft TARK container and is deployed in weeks instead of the five years and USD 15–50 million required for a cryogenic plant. We set out a four-phase implementation program for national gas companies and governments and discuss the effect on supply security after the loss of about one third of global supply in March 2026. Keywords: helium, natural gas, vacuum separation, wellhead extraction, critical materials, supply security, ARBOK Vacuum Cracking, strategic reserve
