FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF CELL MEMBRANE RECEPTORS IN SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION
Cell-surface receptors convert extracellular chemical and physical cues into intracellular responses that regulate metabolism, growth, differentiation, immunity and survival. This narrative review synthesizes the functional organization of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), ligand-gated ion channels and cytokine receptors. Particular attention is given to ligand selectivity, second messengers, phosphorylation cascades, receptor trafficking, signal attenuation and pathway cross-talk. The literature indicates that biological output is determined not only by ligand binding but also by receptor abundance, subcellular localization, feedback and the duration of signaling. Mechanistic insights offer a foundation for targeted therapies and experimental approaches to receptor-associated diseases. The article is a literature review and does not report original experimental measurements.
