A Non-Orientable Orbifold Toy Model for a Finite Universe with Infinite Dynamics: The Afoton as a Codimension-4 Defect
We present a toy model in which the universe is spatially finite but dynamically infinite. The model is formulated as a five-dimensional hyperbolic orbifold whose boundary is a quadrant times a real projective plane. This geometry simultaneously encodes two intuitions: (I) a ball bouncing infinitely in a finite quadrilateral (walls and corner), and (II) a Möbius-like identification where inside and outside coincide (non-orientability). We identify a sector decoupled from the photon—the afoton—as a codimension-4 line defect localized at the intersection of the corner and the orientifold plane, invisible to photons by Z2 symmetry. We compute the renormalized action, the Laplacian spectrum, and the one-loop corrections. We emphasize that this is a toy model, not a theory of the observed universe. Its value is conceptual: it shows that a finite space can host infinite dynamics, and that a sector decoupled from photons can be geometrically realized as a codimension-4 defect in a non-orientable orbifold. A companion paper (forthcoming) explores a technically simpler alternative with a toroidal boundary T4, where the afoton is realized as an odd Kaluza–Klein tower.
