Assessing the socio-economic impacts of 2022 floods in Noshki District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Flood assessments need to capture household economic losses alongside interruptions to the services required for recovery. This study examines the reported consequences of the 2022 floods in Noshki District, Balochistan, Pakistan, using a survey of 214 flood-affected households and a satellite-derived flood map reproduced from a United Nations Satellite Centre product. Survey results were summarized using frequencies and percentages. Mean monthly income was reconstructed from the frequency-weighted before-and-after income table. Respondents reported minor housing damage in 65.9% of cases, partial damage in 23.8%, and complete damage in 10.3%. Reconstructed mean monthly income declined from 61,379 to 46,238, a reduction of 24.7%. Transportation was disrupted for 92.1% of respondents, including 54.7% reporting interruptions of three or four weeks. All respondents reported electricity interruptions, while 86.0% answered negatively to the disaster-preparedness awareness item. Reports of irrigation damage and damage to local school buildings indicate that losses extended beyond individual dwellings. The findings support recovery planning that addresses housing, income, access routes, utilities, and preparedness together.
