Attitude of Teachers and Students towards Artificial Intelligence in Higher School Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing the teaching-learning process by providing innovative tools for learning, assessment, lesson planning, and academic support. The present study aimed to assess the attitudes of higher-secondary students and teachers towards AI in education and examine their perceptions of its usefulness and challenges. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, involving 100 higher-secondary students and 50 teachers from government and private schools in Assam, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected online using self-structured questionnaires comprising Likert-type attitude statements. The findings revealed that 71% of students were aware of AI tools, while 63% used them for learning or homework. Additionally, 91% supported teacher guidance on the ethical use of AI, and 86% expressed privacy concerns. Among teachers, 74% showed willingness to use AI, while 82% identified inadequate training as a barrier to its effective utilisation. Teachers also recognised the potential of AI to reduce workload and support lesson planning. However, concerns regarding privacy, ethical use, overdependence, independent thinking, and the effectiveness of AI-generated information were evident. The study highlights the need for teacher training, AI literacy, ethical guidelines, and data protection measures. Responsible AI integration, supported by equitable digital access, can enhance educational experiences while preserving meaningful teacher–student interaction and independent learning.
