The health preservation of female sailors concerning issues of gender-conditioned violence. Part III. The factors of professional risk and ways of their minimization

The article examines the problem of gender-conditioned violence in maritime industry as a specific occupational risk that has destructive impact on health of female sailors. The special attention is paid to analysis of working conditions in confined space of ship, which exacerbate vulnerability of this category of workers. The actuality of the topic is conditioned by increasing participation of females in maritime professions, while institutional, organizational and socio-psychological factors of their vulnerability remain unchanged. It is established that gender-conditioned violence at sea is systemic risk factor determined by spatial social isolation, rigid hierarchy of maritime service and cultural normalization of discriminatory practices. It is proven that consequences of such pressure go beyond scope of psychological discomfort, causing serious somatic and psycho-emotional disorders that undermine overall safety of navigation. The article substantiates the proposition that health of female sailors should be considered not only as set of medical measures, but also as complex of organizational, legal, educational, and preventive measures targeted to support of safe professional environment. The necessity to transit from reactive model of incident management to proactive system of protection. The set of measures to minimize risks, including institutionalization of policy of “zero-tolerance”, implementation of digital channels of independent psychological support and gender-oriented modernization of medical maintenance of crews.
