Challenges in Internet Access in Cameroon: Issues, Constraints, and Prospects for Bridging the Digital Divide.
Internet access is now a key driver of economic, social, educational, and technological development. In Cameroon, despite the progress made in recent years in terms of digital infrastructure and the expansion of telecommunications networks, a large portion of the population continues to face numerous challenges in accessing the Internet. This situation contributes to the widening of the digital divide between urban and rural areas, as well as among different socioeconomic groups. This essay analyzes the main challenges related to Internet access in Cameroon by highlighting the issues, constraints, and prospects for bridging the digital divide. It focuses in particular on economic barriers, such as the high cost of digital devices and Internet subscriptions; infrastructure deficiencies characterized by uneven network coverage; and problems related to the electricity supply and the quality of services provided. The study also examines the impact of these challenges on education, social inclusion, entrepreneurship, and the country’s economic development. Through a review of the literature and a critical analysis of public policies and private initiatives, this study highlights the efforts undertaken by government authorities, telecommunications operators, and development partners to improve access to digital technologies. It emphasizes, however, the need to adopt more inclusive and sustainable strategies to ensure equitable Internet access for the entire population. The essay concludes that bridging the digital divide in Cameroon requires a multidimensional approach based on strengthening digital infrastructure, reducing access costs, improving network coverage in rural areas, developing digital skills, and implementing appropriate public policies. These actions are essential for promoting digital inclusion and supporting the country’s socioeconomic development in the context of the global digital transformation.
