Holistic Integrative Medicine: A new paradigm for life and health

Background Over the past century, modern medicine has achieved remarkable progress driven by increasing specialization, yet this trajectory has also given rise to systemic problems, including fragmented care, a focus on disease rather than on the patient, and an emphasis on isolated parts at the expense of the whole. Objective This article aims to systematically articulate the theoretical core and methodology of Holistic Integrative Medicine (HIM) and to examine its pathways of application in clinical practice, medical education, and global health governance, in response to the World Health Organization's definition of health as a state of complete physical, psychological, and social well-being. Discussion HIM is not a simple aggregation of disciplines; rather, it integrates the most advanced knowledge and theories of modern medicine with the most effective clinical experience across specialties, and recalibrates them according to each patient's physical, psychological, and social circumstances, thereby generating a new body of medical knowledge. This article develops its argument across six dimensions: the Way and the Technique of medicine, the body's own natural force, the China Anti-Cancer Association Guidelines for Holistic Integrative Management of Cancer, integrated management of chronic disease at the primary-care level, reform of medical education, and the redefined role of physicians in the age of artificial intelligence. Conclusion HIM represents both the inevitable trend and the highest stage of medical development. It offers a practical pathway for addressing the current predicament of modern medicine and constitutes a core methodology for realizing the "Healthy China" strategy and the goal of global health equity. The international academic community should strengthen theoretical development and empirical research on HIM and jointly advance the global practice of this new paradigm.
