Analysis of the Factors Contributing to the Increase in Islamophobia in New York, USA during the Joe Biden Era (2019-2024)
Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Islamophobia in the United States has sharply increased, both in institutional policies and individual discriminatory attitudes. The 9/11 event created a widespread stigma linking the Muslim community with extremism and terrorism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that have contributed to the rise in Islamophobia in the United States during the presidency of Joe Biden (2019-2024), focusing on New York City as a central location for events and the impacts of Islamophobia. New York, a multicultural city with a highly diverse population, has often been at the center of issues related to religious diversity, including Islamophobia. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, drawing on secondary data from journals and publications related to Islamophobia. The findings of this study conclude that Islamophobia in the United States has increased due to several key factors, including media representation that frequently associates Muslims with terrorism, reinforcing negative stereotypes against them. Secondly, the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict has worsened domestic tensions, often resulting in an increase in hate crimes against Muslims. Thirdly, the rise in visibility of a more diverse and vocal Muslim community, particularly from the younger generation, has often triggered a backlash from certain groups influenced by hate speech, both in the real world and online.
