From bouts to readiness to compete: temporal dynamics of stress, fatigue, recovery and monitoring-informed decisions in combat sports

Combat-sport tournaments require decisions before responses to previous efforts have resolved. Detecting a change does not establish that an indicator predicts the next task or improves a decision. This Perspective proposes a task- and time-specific framework linking prior bouts, recovery time and subsequent demands through three evidentiary requirements. Responsiveness concerns reproducible changes beyond measurement error when an indicator represents a response to effort. Predictive validity concerns anticipation of a pre-specified subsequent outcome and added information beyond simpler measures. Decision utility concerns improved outcomes relative to usual practice. Indicators interpreted as current status or stable capacity need not respond to prior effort, but still require adequate measurement properties and prospective evaluation. Evidence from repeated bouts, recovery interventions, mental fatigue, sleep restriction and weight loss suggests that monitoring domains are not interchangeable. The framework retains discordant indicators, evaluates combinations and communicates uncertainty without global clearance labels. Three hypotheses address task and time dependence, maintained performance with increasing effort cost, and indicator-informed decisions. Medical decisions remain independent and take precedence. This is an operational extension of existing principles, not a validated predictive tool.
