The play in the mirror: examining mirror-stage queerness in Farewell My Concubine

Abstract The development of queer identity which appears in Farewell My Concubine (1993) follows a path that differs from models based on personal desires and Western-style coming-out stories because it emerged from the unique cultural practice of Beijing Opera. The global acclaim of the film does not illuminate why Cheng Dieyi experiences intense mental entrapment through his stage role because his situation requires a thorough psychoanalytic examination. The research develops a queer psychoanalytic extension of Jacques Lacan’s mirror stage theory to examine how forced artistic indoctrination reshapes processes of gendered subject formation beyond Western identity-based models of queer selfhood. Farewell My Concubine manifests how an opera performer spends his life as a dan role while his identity merges with his continuous performance of this female character. The article employs Lacanian theory to study the film which demonstrates how Beijing opera rituals and disciplinary systems and ideological frameworks create a queer reflective self. The article argues that Cheng Dieyi’s subjectivity emerges through what this study terms a “queer mirror-stage arrest”: a historically intensified form of fractured identification in which the theatrical image of femininity becomes compulsively internalized as the ego ideal. Queer subjectivity in the film emerges through aesthetic discipline, theatrical performance, and historical violence thus making it impossible to match the fixed gender expectations of a conventional social system.
