Navigating the STORM of Structural and Stereochemical Systematization of Monosaccharides

Carbohydrate complexity stems largely from the number and structural diversity of monosaccharides, many differing only in stereochemistry. Trivial names and systematic names resulting from stereochemistryaffecting modifications obscure structural relationships, creating barriers for newcomers and sometimes puzzling experts. Systematic Tables of Relevant Monosaccharides (STORM) addresses these issues by organizing monosaccharides in tables, aligned by corresponding stereochemistry and grouped by analogous modifications. STORM comprises five tables for reference, systematization, and education: major monosaccharides, branched monosaccharides, ulosonic acids, heptoses, and atypical monosaccharides, totaling 351 distinct monosaccharides in 336 cells. Color-coded property marks visualize relationships and reveal monosaccharides not yet described. STORM tables are extensible and customizable.
