The motherhood and childhood care in Ethiopia. Report II. The dynamics of indicators of perinatal mortality

The perinatal mortality is one of the priority problems of public health, especially in countries with low level of income. One of its highest indicators are observed in the Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. The objective of the study is to analyze indicators and risk factors of stillbirth and early neonatal mortality in Ethiopia according disposable foreign publications.According to review of 14 studies, cumulative value of early neonatal mortality in the Sub-Saharan Africa made up to 80.3 (from 66 to 94.6 per 1000 live births). Ethiopia had the highest combined estimate of early neonatal mortality. The observed and adjusted indicators of perinatal mortality in Ethiopia ranged from 42.9 to 58.4 cases per 1000 births. At the same time, the country has significant reserves to reduce perinatal mortality through medical, social and organizational measures. At that, in Ethiopia, among women who gave birth in 2019, only 43% received antenatal care 4 or more times while pregnant. In 2016, childbirth in presence of qualified medical personnel took place only in 27.7% of cases. The percentage of women satisfied with existing maternity services does not exceed 70.5%. It should be noted that results of studies of perinatal mortality and its risk factors carried out in Ethiopia are very contradictory. In conditions of shortage of national resources, accurate recording of perinatal mortality is serious problem. Therefore, in order to improve situation, efforts are be made to develop medical documentation system. The accurate definition of indicators of perinatal mortality and identification of affecting factors are important for taking scientifically grounded measures to reduce it.
