Uncovering host-galaxy properties of variable AGN with LSST
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a ground-breaking astronomical facility due to start full capacity survey operations this year. The 10-year Legacy Survey of Space Time (LSST) conducted with Rubin will revolutionise astronomy by mapping the entire Southern sky every few days and generating a petabyte scale dataset containing billions of astronomical sources. Within the rich LSST dataset there will be millions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), with new types of AGN uncovered through their variability signatures. At the same time, the deep coadd images from LSST will have the necessary sensitivity to spatially resolve the host galaxies of these AGN out to redshifts of ~1. Variability properties of AGN, such as their variability amplitude and timescales, have been shown to be correlated with the SMBH accretion rate. However, relatively little is known about the connection between AGN variability and host galaxy properties out to z~1. I will present my work on using LSST Commissioning Camera (ComCam) and HyperSuprimeCam images to understand the relationships between AGN variability and host galaxy stellar mass, colour and morphologies. The pilot investigation will demonstrate what will be possible in terms of understanding the co-evolution of new populations of variability selected AGN discoverable with LSST.
