AWARENESS AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS QUALITY SLEEP FOR OVERALL WELLBEING AMONG FACULTY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, NIGERIA

Quality sleep is a foundational pillar of health and occupational performance, yet faculty members in Nigerianuniversities — navigating heavy teaching, research, and administrative obligations are a high-risk group for chronicsleep insufficiency. This study assessed awareness, attitudes, and associated factors regarding quality sleep for overallwellbeing among University of Benin (UNIBEN) academic staff. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 320faculty members selected through stratified random sampling from eight faculties. Instruments included the PittsburghSleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Sleep Hygiene Awareness and Practice Scale (SHAPS), and a researcher-developedattitude scale. Logistic regression identified predictors of poor sleep quality. Mean PSQI global score was 7.8 ± 3.4,with 64.1% classified as poor sleepers (PSQI > 5). Sleep hygiene awareness was moderate (52.8% high awareness),while attitudes towards sleep were predominantly negative/dismissive (58.4% reported sleep as 'non-priority'). Heavyworkload (aOR = 3.14), negative sleep attitudes (aOR = 2.87), and inadequate sleep hygiene practice (aOR = 2.53)were independent predictors of poor sleep quality. Most UNIBEN faculty members are poor sleepers with dismissiveattitudes towards sleep health. Given the identified drivers, UNIBEN should commission a workload audit, integratea faculty sleep health promotion programme (screening, hygiene counselling, attitude-reframing) into wellnessactivities, and pilot policies discouraging late-night work communications.
