Aesthetic Construction in Stage Spatial Flow and Dance Composition: A Case Study of the Dance Work Mother Bridge

This article examines how Mother Bridge turns two apparently unrelated materials, the stone architecture of Luoyang Bridge and the ordinary wish to come home, into stage meaning through movement. It argues that the choreography's organisation of space is not a container for the drama but the drama itself. Three procedures recur: the gathering and scattering of the group, the layering of bodies at different depths, and the long horizontal line that allows a row of dancers to stand in for a bridge deck. Waves are suggested by weight rather than by props, the bridge by interval and alignment rather than by scenery. Vertical arrangement carries a second argument, since lifting and sinking can be read both as historical depth and as emotional ascent. Light and projected image complicate the picture further, softening the seam between the built world and the remembered one, so that "bridge" comes to mean a junction in time and "return" a matter of kinship rather than geography. What results is a way of thinking in space rather than a decorative scheme: traditional symbols are re-activated through a contemporary movement vocabulary, and the audience is led into the maritime culture of Fujian and the patriotic feeling that underwrites it. The discussion closes with what the case suggests for the wider relation between spatial flow and compositional design.
