Perkembangan Sejarah Pendidikan Islam Di Indonesia: Dari Tradisi Pesantren Hingga Era Digital

Islamic education plays a significant role in the development of Indonesian society, particularly in instilling Islamic values, shaping character, and fostering knowledge. Its evolution has unfolded through various institutions ranging from mosques, surau (traditional prayer houses), and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) to madrasah, Islamic schools, and higher education institutions. As times have changed, Islamic education has evolved in terms of its institutional framework, curriculum, pedagogical methods, and the integration of digital technology. This article examines the history of Islamic education in Indonesia, the development of the Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam PAI) curriculum, and the transformation of Islamic education in the digital era. The study employs a literature review methodology, analyzing eleven relevant journal articles. The findings indicate that while Islamic education continues to undergo change, it remains steadfast in its core objective: to cultivate individuals who possess faith, knowledge, and noble character. Digitalization offers opportunities to expand access to learning and enhance the quality of education; however, its implementation requires well-prepared educators, equitable access to technological infrastructure, high-quality learning resources, and a strong focus on character development among students. Consequently, the advancement of Islamic education must integrate technological progress with scholarly traditions and Islamic values.
