Barriers to Entry for Social Entrepreneurs in Ghana

Social entrepreneurship has emerged as an important mechanism for addressing persistent social and economic challenges in developing countries, including Ghana. Despite the growing interest in this sector, aspiring social entrepreneurs often encounter multiple barriers that limit the creation, growth, and sustainability of social enterprises. This study examines the key barriers to entry faced by social entrepreneurs in Ghana. It identifies critical challenges such as limited access to finance, inadequate institutional and policy support, low awareness and understanding of social entrepreneurship, regulatory constraints, and limited access to networks and mentorship. Additionally, infrastructural deficiencies and market uncertainties further restrict the ability of social entrepreneurs to launch and scale impactful ventures. Through the analysis of existing literature and sector reports, the study highlights how these barriers disproportionately affect early-stage social enterprises and innovators seeking to address pressing social problems. The findings underscore the need for stronger policy frameworks, improved financial instruments tailored to social ventures, capacity-building initiatives, and enhanced collaboration between government, private sector, and development organizations. Addressing these barriers is essential for fostering a supportive ecosystem that enables social entrepreneurs in Ghana to contribute effectively to sustainable development, job creation, and social innovation.
