Drawbacks and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in the Medical Field

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important technology in modern healthcare. It is being used for medical image analysis, disease prediction, clinical decision support, drug discovery, patient monitoring, and administrative activities. AI can improve the speed and efficiency of healthcare, but its use also introduces significant risks. This paper examines the major drawbacks of AI in the medical field, including algorithmic bias, inaccurate predictions, lack of explainability, privacy and security risks, high implementation costs, overdependence on automated systems, accountability problems, and lack of quality training data, ethical concerns, and unequal access to AI-based healthcare. The World Health Organization (WHO) has specifically emphasized the importance of safety, transparency, human autonomy, accountability, equity, and privacy when implementing AI in healthcare. The paper also discusses possible solutions and future research directions for developing safe, reliable, and responsible medical AI.
