Framework for Establishing a Fire Safety Management Zone for Mezzanine Spaces in Logistics Warehouses

Mezzanines and multi-tier racks in logistics warehouses may be excluded from architectural floor area calculations under certain conditions, even though they create additional storage and working spaces that can affect fire spread and fire protection conditions. In this study, domestic regulations and relevant provisions in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore were reviewed to examine spatial management approaches for mezzanines and similar storage spaces. Based on this analysis, a Mezzanine Fire Safety Management Zone is proposed for continuous spaces where the upper and lower areas are not separated by a fire compartment and where fire or smoke movement, or continuity of fire protection conditions, is present. Spatial, mezzanine, storage, protection, and response characteristics are proposed as basic evaluation elements. The proposed zone is intended as a spatial assessment unit for evaluating fire risk and the need for additional fire protection, rather than as a replacement for existing fire compartments or sprinkler protection areas.
