Why we love our community-based capstone course and how we created it

We developed and implemented a community-based learning course that serves as the capstone in our undergraduate applied math program. With many years of experience, we share the outstanding impact we have observed on students, faculty, and our community. Additionally, we reflect on lessons we have learned in this process. We hope to encourage and support other mathematics faculty to adapt this model for their institutions.

Abstract

We developed and implemented a community-based learning course that serves as the capstone in our undergraduate applied math program. With many years of experience, we share the outstanding impact we have observed on students, faculty, and our community. Additionally, we reflect on lessons we have learned in this process. We hope to encourage and support other mathematics faculty to adapt this model for their institutions.
